CHURCH HILL- Dorothy Christian Skelton, 86, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 16, 2012 after several years of declining health surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Mrs. Skelton was a life long resident of Hawkins County and a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church. She and her husband owned and operated Skelton’s Motel and Restaurant and Greenland Park for many years. Prior to her illness, she was very active in her Church and sang in the choir. When she was no longer able to attend Church, she continued to sing her gospel songs at home for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Homer Charles Skelton, parents; Bert and Maude Long Christian, sisters; Ada Lorene Christian and Eleanor Christian Bruner, Brothers-in-law; James Red Bruner, Delmas Skelton, Layle Arnold, Kyle Arnold, Fred Head, Sisters-in-law; Myrtle Skelton Arnold, Loretta Skelton Fields and Charlotte Skelton.
She is survived by her sons; Sherrell Skelton and wife, Karen, Vim Skelton and wife, Debbie of Church Hill, Rick Skelton and partner, Susan Calhoun of Kingsport, Best Friend and devoted caregiver of 13 years, Margaret Wheatley, Brother, Bert Christian and wife, Newana of Surgoinsville, Brothers-in-law and Sisters-in-law; Eddie and Jean Skelton of Kingsport, Ron and Renee Skelton, Wanda Head, Bobbie Skelton of Church Hill, Fannie Arnold of Knoxville, several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 1 to 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Rebekah J. Cote officiating. Her son, Rick, will sing a special song remembering their mother. Music will be provided by Ron and Eddie Skelton and Ray Price on acoustic guitar.
Graveside services will be conducted following the service at Church Hill Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jim Bruner, Sherrell Ball, Eddie Larkin, Johnny Skelton, and Mrs. Skelton’s sons.
A special thank you goes to Susan Jordon with Amedisys Home Health, Melissa and Sandra with Hospice, Louise Christian, Paula Wagner, and all the caregivers who have helped with Dorothy over the past several years.
Since Mr. Skelton was a former WWII Prisoner of War, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the local chapter Rolling Thunder TN4. They provide help for former Veterans and aid in bringing American POW’s and those Missing in Action back home.
